Medical
Insurance For Canadians
Traveling Out of Canada For An Extended Period of Time
Expatriate health insurance is
health insurance specifically designed to cover unexpected
medical expenses for individuals who are traveling outside of
their home country for extended periods of time. There are
expatriate plans available for people going to and from most
countries, and for citizens of most countries.
If you are a Canadian citizen who
will be out of Canada for an extended trip, whether for work,
recreation, or other reasons, it is important that you understand
the potential financial risks relating to your health insurance.
Canadians enjoy a government sponsored healthcare system that is
guided by federal legislation, but administered by the provinces.
This provincial healthcare plan differs somewhat from province to
province.
When you travel out of your home
province or out of the country, your provincial healthcare plan
will usually cover you for most medical expenses you may incur up
to the cost they would have paid if you were in your home
province. Of course, in many foreign countries a medical crisis
might cost much more than it would in your home province, and if
so, you will be liable for that extra cost. For this reason you
should always buy Travel Insurance when you leave the
country. Regular Travel Insurance is intended to cover certain
costs incurred as a result of a sudden and unexpected accident or
illness over and above the costs that can be recovered from
your provincial plan. For this reason, regular Travel
Insurance is only in force if
you ARE covered by your
provincial healthcare plan. If, for any reason, your provincial
plan is canceled or suspended, regular Travel Insurance is no
longer effective.
If you are traveling out of the
country for more than a certain number of days in any 365
day period, your provincial plan may be canceled or
suspended. The maximum number of days differs from province to
province. There may be a provision under some circumstances for an
extension to your coverage while out of the country, so you should
always check with your provincial plan administration office
if you are leaving the country for any extended trip. If your
provincial plan is suspended, any regular Travel Insurance that
you have as an individual plan or with a group plan will be out
of force and you could be exposed to an enormous risk.
After discussing your needs with
your provincial plan administration office, you may conclude that
you need Expatriate Health Insurance. This coverage is
specifically designed for individuals who have had their
provincial plan suspended or canceled.
In this section we will show you
exactly what an Expatriate Plan will cover. If you purchase
a good plan, the coverage is fairly comprehensive. However,
generally speaking, they do not cover pre-existing
conditions and may not provide coverage in some other
circumstances such as engaging in professional or dangerous sports,
acts of war, etc. Certain plans may or may not cover pregancy and issues relating to pregnancy. The complete policy wording of one of
these plans is available here and we highly advise you to read
it in its entirety before making a decision and a purchase. If
you need further help, please contact us using the contact
information below.
There are very few companies in
Canada or around the world that are offering
Expatriate Health Insurance at a reasonable price. We have found that
one company in Canada stands out far above the rest with a superior
product, an excellent price, and very good service.
This company has designed products specifically and only for Canadians.
Although it is not our general policy to focus on only one
company's products, in this case, we could find no other company
that so competently filled the needs of travelers as does E.T.F.S.
(Expert Travel Financial Security). Therefore, we have decided to
offer you the actual Brochure, Policy Wording, Price
List, and Application Form from E.T.F.S. here. You can
read these documents here, or download them to your computer for
later use.
This Expatriate Health Plan
can be purchased for 6, 9, or 12 months and must be fully paid
for at the time of purchase. These documents
will allow you to gain a full understanding of the product and clearly see the price. If you are paying by credit card, you can purchase it online through this website. If you wish to pay by some other method, please contact us before completing the application.
If after reading this material you
find this product does not fully meet your requirements,
please contact us with specific information and we will try to
help you find what you need. There are plans from other companies
that are more comprehensive, but they are usually much more expensive, and
are designed mainly for people who will be working out of
the country, are looking for Long Term Disability Coverage, and
whose company will be paying for the cost of the insurance.
If this is your situation, contact us for personal service.
The product shown here called the Viator Individual Expatriate Health Insurance is
underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Company of
Canada, one of Canada's largest and most respected insurance
companies.
